On May 21, more than 100 attendees gathered at the A-B Tech Conference Center in Asheville to celebrate the 106th birthday of Wilma Dykeman—an influential writer, environmentalist, and social justice advocate whose legacy continues to inspire generations. The annual Wilma Dykeman Birthday Legacy Celebration brings together environmentalists, artists, writers, and community leaders for an evening of reflection, performance, and shared purpose.

Born in Asheville in 1920, Wilma Dykeman devoted her life to telling the stories of Appalachia and advocating for environmental stewardship and racial equity. Through her writing and public voice, she elevated the importance of community, culture, and the natural world, leaving a lasting impact on the region and beyond.

This year’s celebration carried special meaning for Givens Communities. As a former Givens Estates resident, Wilma Dykeman maintained a close connection to the community, one reflected in the presence of both residents and Givens Foundation team members at the event.

Jim Stokely, Wilma Dykeman’s son and President of the Wilma Dykeman Legacy, reflected on that connection during the program, sharing: “When I think of celebrating spirit, I think of Givens Communities and the incredible care mother received while she was there.”

The evening served as a powerful reminder that Dykeman’s legacy lives on—not only through her writing, but through the ongoing work of those committed to environmental integrity, social justice, and the power of storytelling.
