Givens Estates Resident and Community Leader Doubly Honored

Civic leader, business innovator, community benefactor and Givens Estates resident Oscar Wong was awarded both the prestigious Order of the Long Leaf Pine and the Distinguished Citizen Award in a ceremony attended by more than 400 people at the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Wednesday, May 3.

Wong is the founder of Highland Brewing and was a prominent player in the then-burgeoning craft beer scene when he started the business as a hobby in 1994. Today, Asheville is known as “Beer City USA” and is home to dozens of microbreweries. He is known for an entrepreneurial spirit, an engaging manner and – often done quietly and without fanfare –numerous philanthropic deeds.

The Order of the Long Leaf Pine, the state’s highest civilian award, was conferred by Gov. Roy Cooper and presented by former Asheville mayor Louis Bissette. Joining the ranks of the Order reflects exemplary service and exceptional accomplishments made for the community and state.

The Daniel Boone Council of the Boy Scouts of America honored Wong with its Distinguished Citizen Award, which recognizes individuals who go above and beyond expectations. The highest honor given by the youth organization, it celebrates those who truly make a difference and hold ideals that align with the mission of Scouting.

Nestled among the oaks and evergreens of greater Asheville, Givens Estates is a welcoming senior community that embodies the natural beauty and fresh perspective of the Blue Ridge Mountains. For more information, go to givenscommunities.org.
